Mobile VO2 Max & RMR Testing

We bring the lab to you. Clinical-grade, breath-by-breath VO2 Max and metabolic testing anywhere within about a two-hour drive of Portland, Maine or Boston, Massachusetts.

The VO2 Master analyzer we use is portable and worn on the body, which means the test does not have to happen in a lab, a hospital, or even a gym. It can happen wherever you actually train. Every test is administered in person by Neil Spillane, Certified Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach, who sets up the equipment, runs the protocol, and walks you through your numbers before he leaves.

How far we travel

We test anywhere inside roughly a two-hour drive of Portland, ME or Boston, MA. Together those two circles cover most of southern and coastal Maine, all of New Hampshire's Seacoast and Merrimack Valley, eastern and central Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and the edges of southern Vermont and northern Connecticut.

Within two hours of Portland, ME

Portland, South Portland, Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth, Falmouth, Freeport, Brunswick, Bath, Boothbay, Damariscotta, Rockland, Camden, Augusta, Waterville, Lewiston-Auburn, Bridgton, Bethel, the Sunday River and Sugarloaf corridors, Kennebunk, Sanford, York, and across into Portsmouth, Dover, Rochester, Concord, Manchester, and North Conway, NH.

Within two hours of Boston, MA

Greater Boston and MetroWest, the North Shore and South Shore, Lowell, Lawrence, Worcester, Springfield, New Bedford, Fall River, Cape Cod and the Islands' ferry ports, Providence and Newport, RI, Hartford, CT, and Nashua, Manchester, Concord, and Portsmouth, NH.

Not sure whether you are inside the radius? Send us your address and we will tell you straight away. We travel beyond it regularly for group bookings and multi-athlete days.

Where we can test you

Because the analyzer is worn rather than wheeled in, we are not limited to a treadmill in a clinic. These are the settings we work in most often.

At home

Home gym, garage, or basement. If you have a treadmill or a stationary bike, that is all we need — we bring the analyzer, headgear, tablet, and every consumable.

At the pool

For swimmers and triathletes who want their numbers from the water rather than a bike they never ride. We test poolside at your club, Y, or municipal pool.

On the track

Running-specific testing on a real running surface. Useful if you race on the road or the track and want zones built from how you actually move, not from a treadmill belt.

At the boathouse

Crew and rowing clubs, tested on your own ergs at your own boathouse. We can move a full roster through in a day or two — ask about squad pricing.

At your hotel

Traveling for work, a training camp, or a race weekend. Most hotel fitness rooms have a treadmill or bike, which is everything the test requires.

Outdoors

Road, trail, hill repeats, or a course you are targeting. The analyzer travels with you, so we can measure you in the conditions you are actually training for.

If your setting is not on this list, it probably still works. Ask.

Mobile testing pricing

$399VO2 Max test, at your location — travel and setup included
$149VO2 Max or RMR test at a partner gym in Scarborough, ME or Boston, MA
$249VO2 Max + RMR, same visit, at a partner gym location

For comparison, hospital and university exercise physiology labs in the region generally charge $300 to $800 for the same measurement, and usually require a physician referral. See all Upwave Labs services and pricing.

What you get

  • Your VO2 Max score, benchmarked against your age and sex
  • Five heart rate training zones calibrated to your physiology, not a formula
  • Ventilatory thresholds — the intensities where your body shifts fuel sources
  • A PDF report you can load straight into a Garmin, Apple Watch, Whoop, or Coros
  • Your results explained in person, on the spot, before we pack up

What the appointment looks like

  1. We arrive and set up. Analyzer, headgear, and calibration — about ten minutes.
  2. The ramp test. 15 to 20 minutes, starting easy and getting progressively harder until you tap out. You control when it ends.
  3. Results, in person. We read your numbers together and translate them into zones you can use the next day.
  4. Your report. A full PDF lands in your inbox the same day.

Plan on roughly 45 minutes start to finish for a single test.

How to prepare

  • No hard training in the 24 hours before your test
  • No caffeine for about three hours beforehand
  • A light meal two to three hours before — don't be fasted for a VO2 Max test
  • Normal workout clothes and the shoes you train in
  • For an RMR test, be fasted at least four hours and skip the caffeine entirely

Custom and group testing

Teams, clubs, corporate wellness days, training camps, coaching practices, longevity clinics, and multi-athlete rosters are a regular part of what we do — and every one of them looks a little different. If you have a setting, a schedule, or a group size that doesn't fit neatly into a booking form, get in touch and we will build something around it.

Frequently asked questions

Do you really come to my house?

Yes. Mobile testing is $399 and includes travel and setup anywhere inside the two-hour radius. All you need on your end is a treadmill or a stationary bike, or one of the settings listed above.

What if I don't have a treadmill or a bike?

Then we test you on a track, on the road, at your pool, or on an erg — or you can book a $149 slot at one of our partner gym locations in Scarborough, ME or Boston, MA.

Is the mobile test as accurate as a lab test?

The measurement is the same: direct, breath-by-breath analysis of the oxygen you consume. The VO2 Master analyzer is a medical-grade device used in performance and research labs. Nothing is estimated from heart rate.

Can you test a whole team in one visit?

Usually, yes. Throughput depends on the protocol and how many stations you can give us. Tell us your roster size and we will map out a day.

How often should I retest?

Every three to six months is typical if you are actively training — long enough for a real physiological change to show up, short enough to tell you whether the training block worked.

More detail on both tests is on our FAQ page.
