At-Home VO2 Max Testing — Now in Greater Boston
Upwave Labs has been providing clinical-grade VO2 Max and metabolic testing at gyms across Southern Maine since 2024. We’re now bringing the same service to Greater Boston — directly to your home gym, studio, or facility.
How It Works
You book a time. We show up with the VO2 Master breath analyzer — a portable, medical-grade device that directly measures oxygen consumption breath by breath. You run or cycle through a progressive ramp test lasting 15-25 minutes. After the session, you receive a detailed PDF report with your VO2 Max score, five custom heart rate training zones, ventilatory thresholds, and fuel utilization data.
All testing is administered by Neil Spillane, Certified Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach, and founder of Upwave Labs.
What You Get
VO2 Max Test ($399 at your home — travel and setup costs included — or $149 at partner gym locations). Your maximum oxygen uptake, custom heart rate zones (1-5) calibrated to your physiology, ventilatory thresholds showing where your body switches fuel sources, and a comparison to age/gender benchmarks. Plug your zones into your Apple Watch, Garmin, or Whoop for smarter training from day one.
We travel to homes and facilities in: Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline, Newton, Watertown, Arlington, Medford, Malden, Quincy, Waltham, Lexington, Needham, Wellesley, and surrounding communities inside the 128/I-95 belt.
Looking for testing in Maine or New Hampshire? We have regular partner gym availability in the Portland and South Portland areas.
What You Need for At-Home Testing
For a VO2 Max test: a treadmill or stationary bike. That’s it. We bring everything else — the analyzer, nose clips, headgear, and all testing materials.
Why At-Home Testing?
Most Boston-area performance clinics and labs lock you into a fixed appointment slot, then add the cost of parking, transit time, and time off work. We come to your home, gym, or studio at a time that fits your training schedule — so the test fits your week instead of the other way around. You get the same VO2 Master breath analyzer used by clinics, without the commute or the waiting room.
FAQ
How long does the VO2 Max test take?
The full appointment runs about 45 minutes. The actual VO2 Max test on the treadmill or bike is a 15-25 minute progressive ramp protocol, and the rest of the time is for setup, calibration, and walking you through your results.
Do I need to be in great shape to take a VO2 Max test?
No. The test is graded — it starts easy and progressively gets harder. We measure your physiology wherever it is right now, whether you’re a complete beginner just starting a training plan or a competitive endurance athlete fine-tuning race-day pacing. The data is just as useful at either end of the spectrum, and your custom heart rate zones are calibrated to your current fitness, not someone else’s.
How is this different from a hospital or university lab test?
The protocol and the underlying measurement are the same — direct, breath-by-breath analysis of oxygen consumption. The VO2 Master analyzer we use is the same medical-grade device used in many performance and research labs. The differences are convenience and price: we come to you on your schedule, the test runs $149-$399 instead of $300-$800+, and you walk away with the same VO2 Max number, ventilatory thresholds, and training zones a lab would give you.
Had my first VO2 max test today with UpWave. Was explained everything prior to taking the test, everything was on time and I got immediate results that made sense. It was just what I was looking for in terms of accessibility, affordability, and proof that my fitness is where I want it to be! I highly recommend reaching out if you’re looking for a VO2 max test.
